What Is Mijas Costa?

Mijas Costa is the coastal strip of the municipality of Mijas — a 17-kilometre stretch of Mediterranean coastline running from Fuengirola in the east to the edge of Marbella in the west. It encompasses some of the most sought-after residential communities on the Costa del Sol, including La Cala de Mijas, El Chaparral, Calahonda, Riviera del Sol, and Sitio de Calahonda.

Unlike Fuengirola or Marbella, Mijas Costa is not a single town. It’s a collection of distinct communities along a coastal corridor — each with its own character, its own beach, and its own property market. What they share is a quieter, more residential atmosphere than the larger towns, proximity to some of the coast’s best golf, and a well-established Northern European expat community.

Sitio de Calahonda

A smaller, quieter community nestled between Calahonda and La Cala, popular with buyers who want a more private setting with easy access to the coast. Property here tends to be slightly more spacious — more villas and townhouses relative to the apartment-heavy markets closer to the beach.

The Mijas Costa is one of the strongest golf destinations on the Costa del Sol. La Cala Golf Resort — just above La Cala de Mijas — has three 18-hole courses and is one of the most respected golf facilities in Spain. The Mijas Costa sits between Fuengirola (15 minutes east) and Marbella (25 minutes west) on the AP-7 motorway. Málaga airport is approximately 30 minutes by car. Fuengirola train station — on the Cercanías C1 line to Málaga — is the nearest rail connection, around 15 minutes from the centre of the strip.

Schools

Several international schools serve the Mijas Costa corridor, with options for British, Scandinavian, and Dutch/Belgian curriculums. La Cala de Mijas has its own primary school and is served by secondary schools in Fuengirola and the wider area.

Healthcare

La Cala de Mijas has a public health centre (Centro de Salud). The nearest hospitals are Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella and Hospital Costa del Sol, both within 25–35 minutes. There are private clinics throughout the strip in Fuengirola and Marbella.

Shopping & Amenities

La Cala de Mijas is the main commercial hub for the strip, with supermarkets, restaurants, a weekly market, and a full range of day-to-day services. Fuengirola (Miramar shopping centre) and the Marbella corridor are both within easy reach for larger shopping. The residential communities along the strip each have local shops and services.
